Wilderness Weekend for Teens

Ages: 16-18

June 21-23, 2024

Curious about camping? Want to learn about natural science or outdoor adventure? This weekend is the perfect way to spend some time in nature with a fun group of people. You'll head over to the Peterson Bay Field Station in a water taxi and spend at least one night in our heated yurts. Depending on group interest, the trip may also include a night camping in Kachemak Bay State Park, a morning kayaking in Peterson Bay, and/or a day hike in the State Park.

Teen Peatland Expedition

Ages: 12-15

June 29-July 2, 2024

Want to learn what makes peatlands such a fascinating ecosystem to study? Teens are invited to join an expedition-style four-day/three-night backpacking trip where they will conduct scientific research in a peatland and identify the incredible plants and mosses that grow on its surface. Our expedition will travel between wetlands and the beach where we will also look at the natural history and geology of Kachemak Bay.

Teen EcoAdventure Camp

July 13-22, 2024

This ten-day outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship camp explores the relationship between our environment and our food systems. Explore the diverse habitats of our forests, beaches, and marine ecosystems, and investigate the ways our food systems can support both humans and our environment. From backcountry and yurt camping to learning about salmon fishing and edible plant uses, this adventure-packed camp will develop your ecological and leadership skills while exploring some of the most remote habitats of Kachemak Bay.

Scholarships & Financial Support

Various forms of financial support are available through tiered pricing, scholarships, and travel funding. If you are in need of gear, we have a full range of equipment we can lend for the duration of your camp. Travel funding for Kachemak Bay/Lower Cook Inlet-area youth is also available.

Different financial support options are available for each camp. Please get in touch to learn more.

Youth Internships

We offer a volunteer internship program for high school students who wish to gain more experience working in the fields of environmental education and environmental science. The internship combines working at the Wynn Nature Center and the Yurt on the Spit assisting with our popular Creatures of the Dock Tours. Interns are also trained to be camp counselors for our summer camps for youth ages 9-15. Interns are encouraged to work on a special project of interest during their 6-week internship. Applicants must have completed one year of high school.

Behavioral Policy

The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies (CACS) is an environmental education non-profit. Our staff are dedicated and trained to help all participants have successful and educational experiences. Please review our Behavioral Policy to learn more about how we support our students and create a positive learning environment.

Giving Matters

Your Gift Can Change a Student’s Life.

At the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, we see firsthand the impact our hands-on environmental education programs have on our participants’ educations and futures. And, because we are an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization, we are completely dependent on philanthropic gifts from alumni, parents, staff, friends, foundations, and corporations to supplement enrollment revenues and make exploring with us a possibility for a broader range of students.
