Yurt on the Spit

A gateway for intertidal adventures

Launch your intertidal discoveries on the Homer Harbor Docks, and discover the creatures who call the intertidal zone their home. The Yurt on the Spit is our meeting point for many of our educational programs exploring the coast. Guided tours provide visitors a chance to encounter octopus, sea stars, harbor seals, sea otters, and a myriad of land and seabirds.

Creatures of the Dock Tour

Take a tour of the amazing intertidal life right under your feet at Homer Harbor docks. A trained naturalist will guide you through an exploration of invertebrate life living on and around the Homer Harbor Docks. Available June through August.

Ocean Connection Tour

The perfect 3-hour tour of Kachemak Bay! See marine mammals at haul-outs and seabirds at rookeries, and visit an oyster farm to enjoy a tasting. Our onboard naturalist will serve as your guide for the entire excursion and provide expert insights to Kachemak Bay's incredible landscapes and ocean ecosystems. Available June-September.

Directions

The Yurt on the Spit is located at 4308 Homer Spit Rd, in Homer, Alaska.

  • You can reach the Sterling Highway by heading west on Pioneer Ave. Continue east on the Sterling Highway (AK 1) until the stoplight intersection with Lake Street. Continue straight through the intersection as the Highway turns into Lake Street for approximately .5 miles. Keep left as Lake Street turns into Ocean Drive, and continue for approximately 1 mile. Keep right as Ocean Drive turns into Homer Spit Road, and continue for approximately 3.8 miles. The Yurt on the Spit will be on your left at the top of Ramp 2, in the same bank of shops as Coal Town Coffee, Mako's Water Taxi, and True North Kayaking. If you pass the Salty Dawg Saloon, you've gone too far.

  • When approaching from the north (Anchorage or Seward) on Sterling Highway: Continue east on the Sterling Highway (AK 1) until the stoplight intersection with Lake Street. Continue straight through the intersection as the Highway turns into Lake Street for approximately .5 miles. Keep left as Lake Street turns into Ocean Drive, and continue for approximately 1 mile. Keep right as Ocean Drive turns into Homer Spit Road, and continue for approximately 3.8 miles. The Yurt on the Spit will be on your left at the top of Ramp 2, in the same bank of shops as Coal Town Coffee, Mako's Water Taxi, and True North Kayaking. If you pass the Salty Dawg Saloon, you've gone too far.
